The Adventure Of A Valiant Spaceworm

2022-10-01

A 1.5 year project to build a puzzle game that could only work in virtual reality. We focused on hands, and what this provided the player, and found that drawing and physical manipulation are both very intuitive in virtual reality.

The Adventure of a Valiant Spaceworm is an (incomplete) game that takes these two concepts and puts them together. Players draw 'spaceworms' in the air, which then then be used to physically manipulate the game world. In a Portal-esque manner, the player uses these spaceworms to solve sequences of puzzles, each teaching them how to manipulate their creations in a varying ways. The intended narrator of the game and protagonist was to be the spaceworm. Coincidentally, the game ended up having a similar narrative vision to High On Life.

My brother an I presented this game at WK Conference '21 in Seattle and got a positive reception. The project lost momentum after we started exploring other ideas. Additionally, development for VR was cumbersome and made it hard to enjoy building the game. The grand vision was good, but the execution took too much time when we were busy with work and studies.
